Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, dear friends of the moselmusikfestival, in the spring of 1838 Robert Schumann wrote in his diary “Three wonderful spring days spent waiting for a letter and then the Kreisleriana done in four days – whole new worlds open up to me”.
… different from usual – not in December – but exceptionally in spring, you finally hold the festival program 2023 in your hands. With good reason: “whole new worlds open up to me” – also for us. After more than two years of explorations, negotiations and preparations, we have succeeded, together with our Luxembourgian partners, in offering the special flair of our festival in the future also across borders, along the Luxembourgian Moselle, with the foundation of the moselmusikfestival asbl.
In such a turbulent world, cultural events may initially seem to have fallen out of time. However, extensive studies have long shown that art and culture, in all their forms, are sources of inspiration, consolation, edification, diversion and entertainment throughout a person’s life. By enabling us to experience them physically and in community, they have been shown to help promote our health, awaken our creative potentials and imagination. There is no substitute for “live” experiences. With this in mind, we want to invite you to discover new worlds in your immediate surroundings with our programming this year. Be it through new venues such as the enchanting Orangery of Bekond Castle, be it as Liv and Nadia Migdal, together with Daniel Gerzenberg, introduce you to brilliant and forgotten women authors and componists. Experience how Janus Hochgesand, Danae Pappamathäou-Matschke, Kotaro Fukuma and Lisa Wolfert create a large-scale painting to music and literature before your eyes. Embark on an organ half-marathon with Matthias Grünert or zoom into the world of all of Ludwig van Beethoven’s piano concertos with Joseph Moog, Fabrice Bollon and the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra. Let Ana de la Vega, Dominik Wagner, Paul Rivinius and Lauma Skride convince you that violin, cello and piano are not always the only ingredients for a wonderful evening of chamber music. And The Erlkings prove that Schubert was a singer-songwriter. In addition, our opening and closing concerts, for example, offer a re-encounter with large-scale orchestral and choral literature in top-class instrumentations. And exclusively at this year’s moselmusikfestival, Max Mutzke, Thomas Quasthoff as well as Marialy Pacheco and her trio have arranged a unique jam session.
Not least because our lives are changing so much, the result is that “the concert audience” is far more diverse than it was fifteen or twenty years ago. We also want to take this into account with our programming and our approach. The large audience response in the past season confirms this.
In view of the significant increase in costs in many areas of our events, we are committed to a more sustainable and resource-saving design of the festival program, so that we are constantly striving to reduce the amount of printed matter as well as our energy costs, without sacrificing the quality you have come to expect from our concerts.
All this would not be possible without the passionate work of our small festival team, in whose name I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for the great support of our shareholders, the Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz, the unbroken loyalty of our sponsors and our sponsoring association “Freunde des Mosel Musikfestivals e. V.”. Let’s not forget one thing: our events are more than over 50 hopefully unforgettable concert evenings along the Moselle. This summer, we will again employ several hundred trained musicians, a large number of event technicians and service providers. Thousands of guests from near and far come to our concerts. They use a wide variety of means of transportation, get in the mood for the concert evening in the restaurants or wind down with a glass of wine and then dream away in one of the beds of the many excellent hosts in the region. These are the worlds hidden behind one, two or three hours of touching music.
We look forward to the journey of discovery together with you.
In Luxembourg, it did not go unnoticed that the moselmusikfestival is an established series of events with top-class concerts in extraordinary venues.
It is a good thing that the activities of the moselmusikfestival are now being extended to the Luxembourg Moselle, the Miselerland. With this aim in mind, committed people from the German-Luxembourgian neighboring region, with the help of LEADER Miselerland, founded an independent association under Luxembourg law called “moselmusikfestival asbl” in February 2023, with its headquarters in the Luxembourgian “Moselle metropolis” of Grevenmacher.
Our young and non-profit association now offers no less than five concerts in Miselerland to kick off the 2023 season. As president of this ASBL, I am very happy about this cooperation and musical exchange. Together with the committed co-founders, I see good opportunities to establish this new cultural offering with an upscale level in Miselerland.
